FRSC LANDFILL HEIGHT INCREASE
The picture above shows the top of the landfill as of February 2024. The FRSC is starting a project to add 27.5 metres (90 feet) to the top of the landfill. For perspective the trees around the landfill are 30 to 40 feet high.
On May 14th 2024, the NB Minister of the Environment issued a conditional determination for the height increase to proceed WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A FULL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT.
CMEI contracts Engineering Company exp to provide us with environmental and hydrogeological analysis of the Crane Mountain site. Based on this analysis, CMEI beleives that this decision by the Minister was wrong and that a full EIA is required before any work starts on raising the height of the landfill. To that end, on August 13th, 2024, CMEI's lawyer filed a Notice of Application requesting a stay of the Certificate of Determination, an injunction preventing FRSC from commencing any part of the project to increase the height of the landfill and to overturn the Minister's decision.
CMEI Presentation to the FRSC
On Thursday June 27, CMEI made a presentation to a meeting of the Commission. To review the presentation click here The main message to the Commission was that the potential for leakage is a major concern to CMEI and there is a strong probability that the monitoring may not discover that leakage. This puts a significant threat of pollution reaching the 1000 domestic wells downstream of the landfill.
